Combat! is an American television program that aired on ABC from 1962 until 1967. (The exclamation point in "Combat!" was a stylized bayonet.)

Created by Robert Pirosh, Combat! ran for five seasons, of which the first four are in black and white, with a move to color for the final season. The show covered the lives of a squad of American soldiers in France during World War II. Although the series ran five seasons, King Company never fought its way out of France.

The series lasted longer than the ground war (June 6, 1944 - May 7, 1945) in the European Theatre of Operations

CBS Paramount Television (inherited from ABC Films, Worldvision Enterprises and Paramount Television) owns American television distribution rights to the series, while Disney-ABC International Television has international rights--original producer and copyright holder Selmur Productions was once a division of ABC Films, now CBS Paramount Television.

Combat DVD

The American war drama Combat! was a realistic series created by Robert Pirosh that did not intend to romanticize or fabricate the perils of war to the average soldier. The show focused on soldiers in the King Company, a squad of American soldiers stationed in France during World War II. The series ran for five seasons, the first four appearing in black-and-white and the fifth making the huge transition to color.

Despite the longevity of the series, the men remained in France, never being able to advance further. Unlike many shows featuring soldiers during war, this series focused on the real day-to-day struggles of the typical enlisted man.

The goal of the series was to pay homage to the trials of real soldiers and not paint an unrealistic portrait of war or make a political statement by focusing on the policies and politics of war. Combat! brought the realities and faces of war into audience member’s living rooms and clearly portrayed the moral battles being fought within the soldiers as they sought to make sense of war.

To add to the reality of the series many of the cast members formerly served in some branch of the Armed Services, some even during World War II: Jack Hogan, Dick Peabody and Shecky Greene all served in the U.S. Navy, while Rick Jason served in the Army Air Corps.

Additionally, Vic Morrow served in the U.S. Navy in 1947, while Conlan Carter served in the U.S. Air Force in the post-Korean War era. Pierre Jalbert was a drill sergeant in the University Air Training Corps at Laval University in Canada during the Second World War CBS Television Distribution (inherited from ABC Films, Worldvision Enterprises and Paramount Television) owns American television distribution rights to the series.

Disney-ABC International Television has international rights, since the original producer and copyright holder Selmur Productions was a division of ABC.

Image Entertainment, under license from co-copyright holder Buena Vista Television (now ABC Studios) holds the domestic rights for DVD production. With all of these agencies holding an interest in the series, the series did not appear in DVD format until 2004 and 2005. The complete set contains extras like bloopers, commentaries, and photo galleries in addition to the time-compressed versions of the 152 episodes.
