Bonanza was an American western/cowboy television series which aired on the NBC television network from September 12, 1959 until January 16, 1973. The pilot episode was written by David Dortort, who also produced the series. He had previously produced The Restless Gun and later produced The High Chaparral and The Cowboys, based on the feature film of the same name. Bonanza was the first hour-long network television series filmed in color. For most of its run, the main sponsor of Bonanza was Chevrolet and the stars occasionally appeared in commercials endorsing Chevrolet automobiles. All of the regular cast members had appeared in numerous stage, television and film productions before Bonanza, but none were particularly well-known.

From 1961 to 1972 Bonanza aired on Sunday nights at 9:00 PM throughout most of the United States. This time slot was crucial to the success of the show: from 1964 through 1967, the show was #1 in the yearly Nielsen ratings. In terms of longevity, the show remains NBC's second longest-running series, after Law & Order.

Bonanza DVD complete series collection with all episodes and seasons on DVDs

This American western television series, Bonanza aired on NBC from September 12th 1959 to January 16th 1973. Created by David Dortort, Bonanza had 14 seasons and a total of 430 episodes. The running time was 49 minutes per episode. Starring Lorne Greene as Ben Cartwright, Pernell Roberts as Adam Cartwright, Dan Blocker as Hoss Cartwright, Micheal Landon as Little Joe Cartwright, David Canary as Candy Canaday, Victor Sen Yung as Hop Sing and Mitch Vogel as Jamie hunter. The show was ranked number 1 for three years from 1964 to 1997.

And after this it started losing its popularity and dropped to number 4 and then 3 and finally fell out of the top 10 in 1971. A very interesting fact is related to the costumes wore by the cast of the show. Every recurring character on the show wore the same clothing in almost every episode reason behind this is, it was easier for stunt double and also reduced the cost of production. Bonanza featured a very memorable theme song by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans.

This is a story of the weekly adventures of the Cartwright family lead by thrice-widowed Ben Cartwright. Ben had three sons Adam, Eric and the youngest was Joseph also known as Little Joe. Adam was an architect who builds the ranch. Hop Sing was a Chinese immigrant who was their family cook.

Bonanza is considered a typical western story because the family cared less about the ranch and cared for one another although they all were from separate mothers. They lived on a thousand-square mile ranch called the Ponderosa on the shore of Lake Tahoe in Nevada.

The ranch name refers to the Ponderosa Pine, common in the west. The nearest town from their ranch was Virginia City who’s Sheriff was Roy Coffee played by veteran actor Ray Teal.
